چکیده

Nonlinear diffusion ∂tρ = ∆(Φ(ρ)) is considered for a class of nonlinearities Φ. It is shown that for suitable choices of Φ, an associated Lyapunov functional can be interpreted as thermodynamic entropy. This information is used to derive an associated metric, here called thermodynamic metric. The analysis is confined to nonlinear diffusion obtainable as hydrodynamic limit of a zero range process. The thermodynamic setting is linked to a large deviation principle for the underlying zero range process and the corresponding equation of fluctuating hydrodynamics. For the latter connections, the thermodynamic metric plays a central role.

Effects of thermal diffusion and chemical reaction on MHD transient free convection flow past a porous vertical plate with radiation, temperature gradient dependent heat source in slip flow regime

An analytical investigation is conducted to study the unsteady free convection heat and mass transfer flow through a non-homogeneous porous medium with variable permeability bounded by an infinite porous vertical plate in slip flow regime while taking into account the thermal radiation, chemical reaction, the Soret number, and temperature gradient dependent heat source. The flow is considered u...

Free convective heat and mass transfer of magnetic bio-convective flow caused by a rotating cone and plate in the presence of nonlinear thermal radiation and cross diffusion

This article explores the heat and mass transfer behaviour of magnetohydrodynamic free convective flow past a permeable vertical rotating cone and a plate filled with gyrotactic microorganisms in the presence of nonlinear thermal radiation, thermo diffusion and diffusion thermo effects. We presented dual solutions for the flow over a rotating cone and a rotating flat plate cases. Similarity var...

Identification of Diffusion Parameters in a Nonlinear Convection–diffusion Equation Using the Augmented Lagrangian Method

Numerical identification of diffusion parameters in a nonlinear convection–diffusion equation is studied. This partial differential equation arises as the saturation equation in the fractional flow formulation of the two–phase porous media flow equations. The forward problem is discretized with the finite difference method, and the identification problem is formulated as a constrained minimizat...

From a Large-deviations Principle to the Wasserstein Gradient Flow: a New Micro-macro Passage

We study the connection between a system of many independent Brownian particles on one hand and the deterministic diffusion equation on the other. For a fixed time step h > 0, a large-deviations rate functional Jh characterizes the behaviour of the particle system at t = h in terms of the initial distribution at t = 0. For the diffusion equation, a single step in the time-discretized entropy-Wa...

Entropically driven motion of polymers in nonuniform nanochannels.

In nanofluidic devices, nonuniform confinement induces an entropic force that automatically drives biopolymers toward less-confined regions to gain entropy. To understand this phenomenon, we first analyze the diffusion of an entropy-driven particle system. The derived Fokker-Planck equation reveals an effective driving force as the negative gradient of the free energy. The derivation also shows...
